What the STIU Does
The STIU focuses on identifying, monitoring, and managing individuals with gang or drug‑trafficking ties. They help mitigate the risks associated with these threats through intelligence‑driven work
STIU officers’ duties include:
- Monitor, track and document street gang members in and out of custody.
- Conduct daily monitoring of inmate telephone conversations, messages, photos, and mail.
- Gather and maintain street gang intelligence for drug interdiction purposes.
- Assist outside law enforcement agencies in executing warrants.
- Conduct special operations for gang and drug interdiction and escape apprehension.
- Coordinate with corrections and probation/parole agencies nationwide
The work of STIU officers helps prevent violence and stop contraband before it enters the facility. Their intelligence also guides the Classification Team in housing high‑risk offenders appropriately.
