We are IN the Community because we ARE the Community

Corrections officers are dedicated to the safety of the community, the inmates in our custody, and our fellow officers. As corrections officers, our role is to help keep our community safe, but our involvement in the community goes beyond the walls of the facility. Many of us are actively involved in the community in many other ways. Here are some of the things we have participated in over the last year:

Bataan Memorial Death March

A team of MDC Corrections Officers took party in the 2019 Bataan Memorial Death March. The annual hike, created to honor the victims of the Bataan Death March during World War II, was 26 miles long and took approximately nine hours to complete.

Rio Grande Down Syndrome Network Buddy Walk

It is a proud tradition of MDC to take part in the annual Buddy Walk, benefiting the Rio Grande Down Syndrome Network. Corrections Officers volunteered to give out candy and balloons, demonstrate corrections techniques, and take pictures with the children. Events like this are a great opportunity for residents to meet the corrections officers who work tirelessly to help keep their community safe.

Cops in the Park

MDC was thrilled to have the opportunity to take part in the 2019 Cops in the Park event in Bernalillo. Corrections officers gave out snacks and played games with the kids, including a water balloon toss and corn hole. The goal of the event was to build up trust and stronger bonds by introducing children to the law enforcement and public safety officials in their community.

Bernalillo County Halloween United Way Fundraiser

For Halloween 2019, COs gathered their spookiest costumes and a ton of candy for the Bernalillo County United Way Halloween Fundraiser. Families purchased trick or treat bags, with proceeds going toward the county’s annual United Way fundraiser. MDC’s prisoner transport bus was transformed into a haunted bus with fright lurking in every corner. The COs had a great time meeting local families and providing much-needed support to the United Way.
